What is the latest version of OmniRemote™?
You can always find the latest version of OmniRemote™ by following the "Download" link at the top of this page.

Is there an instruction manual for OmniRemote™?
Yes, the instruction manual is the "Manual.txt" file included in the .zip file downloaded from the web site. In older versions this file was called "ReadMe.txt".

I installed OmniRemote™, but I can't find the icon.
Make sure you are installing Remote.prc; that is the program file. OmniRemote™.pdb is the sample database file.

Should I choose Internal IR or External IR?
See the next question "When I try to train a button all I hear is beep-beep-beep."

When I try to train a button all I hear is beep-beep-beep.
In OmniRemote™, click Menu|Options|Preferences. Check to make sure that you have Internal IR checked if you are using the built in IR on the Palm III or the upgrade card. Check External IR if you are using an OmniRemote™ Module or other IR device that plugs into the HotSync port.

This behavior can also occur if you're using a version older than V1.14 on a Palm IIIx or Palm V which use the new Dragonball EZ microprocessor.

Exactly how many feet will OmniRemote's signal travel?
Unfortunately giving an exact number of feet is not possible. It varies widely depending on the sensitivity of the receiving device and the PalmOS PDA being used. We have found that the IR transmit range can be anywhere from 2 to 32 feet. Our IR Range Measurements page will give you an idea of the range we observed in our lab with various PalmOS devices. However, it is recommended that you download the evaluation version and test it with your equipment before purchasing. If you are having trouble with poor range, see the question "How can I get longer range?"

How can I get longer range?
The most common causes of poor range that can be corrected without hardware are due to poor training or training while the incorrect IR Carrier Frequency has been set in the Training Settings screen. Try changing the IR Carrier Frequency, re-train and try the button again. Repeat this until you have tried all of the built-in frequencies.

Also keep in mind that some PalmOS PDAs have better range than others. Check out our IR Range Measurements page for an idea of the range we observed in our lab with various PalmOS devices.

If you still can't get OmniRemote™ to give you the range you want, there are a couple of products that re-transmit the IR signal via radio to a base unit which sits near the TV. Supposedly, the signal will go very far, even through walls.

An excellent site for more specific information on a couple of IR/RF converters is http://www.pro-bono.net/palm/.

Do I need to change the frequency setting every time I want to use a different remote?
No, the frequency setting only matters during training. When a button is trained, it saves the frequency setting that it is trained at, and uses that frequency whenever that button is pressed.

In training mode, why are there two training screens?
The first screen, which says "align your remote," is the testing screen. At this screen, you press a button on your remote and if your Palm beeps, then it is able to receive the signal. This step is not always necessary; you can skip it if you have already tested your remote.

The second screen, which says "press button on remote," is the training screen. This time when you press the button on your remote, the signal is saved and the button is trained. If you abort out of this screen, the training is not completed.

Can I train OmniRemote™ if I lost my original remote?
OmniRemote™ must learn its signal from something. You could try to borrow a remote from a friend if you know someone who has the same device. Or you could train OmniRemote™ from a pre-programmed universal remote control.

Alternately, GAKworx has posted two OmniRemote™ databases, TV Uni-Remote and CBox Uni-Remote, which contain the IR codes for many different TVs and Cable boxes.

We have not tested these databases yet.

Can I write my own programs that work with OmniRemote™?
Yes! The OmniRemote Developers Kit enables you to write PalmOS programs with consumer IR functionality by making calls into our library. All the end-user needs to run your program is a PalmOS-enabled device and their own copy of our OmniRemote™.

I can't get Auto to work.
When you use auto, try this instead of the usual directions:
Place the remote about two inches from the Palm. Try a combination of holding and repeatedly pressing buttons on the remote. You should get at least one beep every ten seconds. After six beeps the test will end.

If you can't get auto to work, the five buttons have the most common frequencies on them. You might want to just try each of them manually (remember you need to re-train the button after you change the frequency).

How can I make the buttons bigger than the smallest size?
When creating or re-creating a button, rather than just tapping the screen to place the button where you want it, perform the following:

Put the stylus down on the screen in the upper left of where you want the button to be. Don't lift the stylus, but instead, drag it down and to the right until the button is the size you want it. Then lift the stylus.

Don't worry too much about getting the button in the right place, you can always move the button later using Move Buttons mode.

I can't get my repeating buttons to repeat.
OmniRemote™ uses two different repeat routines depending on whether the button is trained by holding the button on the remote (for longer than one second) or by just a quick tap (less than one second). If you're training one way, you might want to try the other, you may get better results with your equipment.

Your results may improve if you re-define a hard key to the repeating button and use the hard key instead of the on-screen button. If so, this may be the result of a bug. Please let us know if you experience this behavior.

Why can I only press a number once?
There are a few devices where when you push a number twice it doesn't send the same code. for example, if you press "1" it sends one code, then you press "1" again it sends a different code, if you press "1" a third time it sends the first code again, etc. Usually if you press another button (Volume up for example) after the number the next time you press the number it will send the first code again (rather than the second).

Because this type of device is (as far as I can tell) quite rare, I was unaware of it when I wrote OmniRemote™, and as such OmniRemote™ does not support this behavior. We are looking into solving this problem in the future. At the moment there are only two solutions I have come up with. You can create two buttons for each number, one for the first press and one for the second. Or you can create each number button as a macro that sends a sequence like:

1 - Volume up - Volume Down

Because the volume code will cause it to reset and expect the first code for "1" the next time you press it.

How many categories can I have?
Although PalmOS limits you to 15 category screens, the "Multiple Database Support" feature of OmniRemote PRO allows you to mask this limitation by utilizing databases. (Note: Non "PRO" versions of OmniRemote are limited to 15 categories.)

Do I have to put all of my TV buttons in the TV category?
No, you can put buttons anywhere you want. The category name does not restrict the use of that category.

Will HotSyncing backup my button layouts and training?
Yes, when you HotSync your layouts and training will be backed up in the file: C:\Palm\PayneC\Backup\OmniRemote™.PDB
(replace PayneC with your username)

For extra safety, you can even make a copy of this file, later you can re-install it manually if your setting are changed by accident.

If your Palm loses its data for any reason, you will need to re-install the application (Remote.PRC) but your layouts and training will be restored automatically. Do not re-install the OmniRemote™.PDB file that came in the .ZIP file or your settings will be lost.

How can I exchange layouts and training with someone else?
For OmniRemote PRO users: First be sure that the other user's database has a different name than yours. If you install another database with the same name, you will lose all of your settings (i.e. button layouts and training). If their database does have the same name, rename yours or theirs using Menu|Advanced|Databases. OmniRemote Pro allows you to beam a database to another user using Menu|Advanced|Databases, or you may follow the older directions below.

For older OmniRemote versions: You can export all of your categories together and make an exact clone of all of your layouts and training.

First HotSync the Palm you want to copy from. Then find the file:
C:\Palm\PayneC\Backup\OmniRemote.PDB
(replace PayneC with your username)

Make a copy of this file and install it on the other Palm using the standard Palm install tool.

Warning, this will delete all buttons and training from the Palm you are installing the file on.

Can I clone an entire category?
Yes! With OmniRemote PRO you can. Simply choose the category and click Menu|Buttons|Select all|Menu|Buttons|Copy, choose the new category and click Menu|Buttons|Paste. (Older versions of OmniRemote™ do not have this feature.)

I lost my registration code.
We will be happy to re-send your registration code. When you e-mail us, include either your order number (PNT#) or the e-mail address you used when you ordered OmniRemote™. This will allow us to quickly verify your order and find your registration code.

My registration code doesn't work.
The registration code is generated from the username, and is unique to that username. If your code does not work, first make sure you entered it correctly. If it still does not work, e-mail us your exact Palm username, including any punctuation or extra spaces (i.e. a trailing space, or two spaces between names).

Also include the information listed in the previous question, so we can verify your original order quickly.

I received the hardware I ordered, but no software.
We do not ship the software. You can download it by following the "Download" link at the top of this page.

How do I find my username?
Install the evaluation version of OmniRemote™, and go to Menu|Options|Registration, and tap the "Register" button.

Where do I enter my registration code?
In OmniRemote™, go to Menu|Options|Registration, tap the "Register" button, and enter your code on the appropriate line.

How do I register OmniRemote™?
To get your registration code, simply order OmniRemote™ by following the "Orders" link at the top of this page.

I can't get to the order page.
If you are using IE5, you may have difficulty getting to a secure site unless the Fortezza, TLS, and PCT settings are de-selected.

If you continue to experience difficulties, e-mail us, and we will send you instructions on how to mail or fax in your order.

Can I pay by check instead of by credit card?
Yes, send us e-mail and we'll send you the appropriate snail-mail address to send your payment and we'll give you a temporary RegCode that you can use to operate OmniRemote™ while you are waiting for your payment to reach us.

Do I need to enter a username if I'm only ordering hardware?
No, you only need to enter a username if you are ordering the OmniRemote™ software.

How are orders shipped, and when can I expect delivery?
Registration codes are sent by e-mail. Hardware orders are shipped by USPS Priority Mail or Global Priority Mail, which takes 3-7 days to arrive.

Do you deliver outside the USA?
Yes.

If I buy OmniRemote™ now, will I have to pay to upgrade later?
Minor version upgrades will be free, such as V2.0 to V2.1. We will charge for major upgrades such as V2.x to V3.x however the price will be reduced for registered users.

Do I have to pay to use OmniRemote PRO if I bought OmniRemote in the past?
Yes and no. Most of the new features of OmniRemote PRO are available free of charge to registered users of older versions of OmniRemote. A small upgrade fee is required if you need the "Advanced" features of OmniRemote PRO. Click here for more information.

How do I upgrade OmniRemote™?
To upgrade, simply download the new version and install the file named "Remote.prc."

Warning! Do not install the file named "OmniRemote.pdb"; doing so will overwrite all previous programming.

The OmniRemote™ software is compatible with...
The OmniRemote PRO software is compatible with all known PalmOS PDAs released as of September 2002 and possibly newer models as well.

However, older versions of OmniRemote are less compatible. OmniRemote v1.171 has been tested with the following PalmOS hardware:

  • PalmPilot Personal
  • PalmPilot Professional
  • All Pilot models with an OS3.0 Upgrade Card
  • Palm III, IIIe, IIIe SE, IIIx, IIIxe, IIIc, V, Vx, VII
  • Some versions of the Palm VIIx
  • Handspring Visor Basic, Edge, Prism, Platinum, Pro, Neo
  • IBM Workpad 20x, 30x, c3, 50u, 50J
  • Symbol SPT1500, SPT1700, SPT1700-2D
  • TRG Pro

Does OmniRemote™ work with newer hardware like the Sony Clié, Palm m500 and m505?
Yes (in most cases). OmniRemote PRO works with all known PalmOS hardware as of September 2002 and possibly newer models as well. (Older versions of OmniRemote do not work with newer hardware platforms.)

Do you have an OmniRemote™ Module that fits the Palm V?
We do not plan to make an IR Module for the Palm V series, but Tech Center Labs has one.

What about the E-Z SyncCable?
We do not plan to make hardware for the Palm V series, but check out Midwest Products' Bridge.

Will OmniRemote™ be available for Windows, WinCE or other non-Palm OS platforms?
At this time there are no plans to support other platforms.

There is a remote control for Windows that connects to the parallel port called CIR. It can be found at:
http://www.ziplabel.com/cir/index.html

Does OmniRemote™ work with the built-in IR on Symbol handheld devices?
Yes, however the IR beam on the Symbol Technologies handheld device does not come out of the unit straight. It comes out angled up slightly. When using it as a remote control, try tilting the screen slightly away from you.

Will OmniRemote™ work with >my< TV and VCR?
That depends on what frequencies your devices use. We suggest that you download the evaluation version and test it with your devices.

Will OmniRemote™ work with my garage door opener, satellite receiver or other remotes whose signals can pass through walls?
If your remote's signal will pass through walls, then it uses radio signals rather than IR. OmniRemote™ cannot reproduce these signals, and we have no plans to support this on Palms in the future with or without external hardware.

Does installing the Enhanced Infrared Update affect OmniRemote™?
We haven't experienced any problems involving this update.

Are there any programs that are incompatible with OmniRemote™?
We have heard reports that IrSync by ISComplete may cause problems with OmniRemote™. We have not yet confirmed these reports.

Are there any types of equipment that OmniRemote™ cannot control?
There are a few devices that OmniRemote™ can't control. First, it can only control devices that use IR, some devices such as car keyless entry systems, garage door openers, and some satellite receivers use radio frequencies. If your device's remote control can go through walls, OmniRemote™ will not work with it.

There are a few IR devices which don't work with OmniRemote™ also. Devices that use a frequency of 455KHz such as some Kenwood receivers and devices made by Bang and Olufsen do not work because the Palm is too slow to reproduce their carrier. (These devices may work with an OmniRemote™ Springboard module connected to a Visor handheld.) There are a few other devices as well, but OmniRemote™ does work with most IR devices.

Will an OmniRemote™ Module give me all of the features of Palm III IRDA?
At the moment there is no IRDA support for the OmniRemote™ Module.

I'm having trouble controlling a particular device. I've tried the usual things; do you have any special instructions for Springboard Module users?
If you installed OmniRemote™ software on your Visor, make sure it is at least version 1.16.

When you train OmniRemote™ make sure you point your remote at the IR receiver on the side of your Visor. The IR LED on the Springboard Module only sends a signal, it does not receive.

If you've already tried retraining using different frequencies and that didn't work, there is another feature for Springboard Module users only that you can try. In the training settings dialogue, try setting the IR sample rate to "fast". With some devices fast works better, but with others slow works better, so be sure to try both rather than always using fast.

My Visor turns off when I push a button.
Try new batteries in your Visor. The Springboard's IR uses a burst of power when a button is pushed, and it can turn off your Visor if the batteries are low.

If I buy the Springboard Module, do I need to download and/or buy the software too?
No, OmniRemote™ Software comes built into the Springboard Module. If you would like to try before you buy, you can download and install the demo version of OmniRemote™. Remember that the software only version isn't compatible with as many devices as the Springboard Module.

Why don't I get a registration code when I buy the Springboard module?
As long as the Springboard Module is installed in the slot no registration code is required for OmniRemote™. If you wish to use OmniRemote™ with the Visor's built in IR instead of using the Springboard Module then you will need to purchase a copy of the OmniRemote™ software.

I already bought the software; can I get a discount on the Springboard Module which contains the software?
There was an introductory period where a discount was possible, however this is no longer available.

Is there an advantage to owning the software and a Springboard Module together?
Yes. Just owning a Springboard Module doesn't give you a registration code. Without a registration code you can't use OmniRemote™ with the Visor's internal IR. If you own several Springboard devices you might find yourself wanting to use OmniRemote™ while you have a different Springboard device installed.

If you have a different PalmOS device as well as your Visor, you can use OmniRemote™ on both if you own both the software and the Springboard Module.

Are there any known bugs in any of the Springboard Module versions?
Yes.

If you encounter problems with macros, timers or hard keys in version 1.16, download the latest version of OmniRemote™.

If clicking the find button in version 1.16 of the online manual crashes your Visor, you can download the latest version of the online manual. (Remember, if your Visor won't turn off, you can reset it by pushing an open paperclip into the reset hole on the back.)

Is there a way to stay in Flip Screen Mode when I use the menu bar?
This question only applies to older versions of OmniRemote (such as version 1.171) since OmniRemote PRO's menus work in both "flipped" and "non-flipped" modes.

For "non-PRO" versions of OmniRemote, a HackMaster hack called FlipHack is available. It lets you rotate your screen to the left, right, or upside-down, and it stays flipped, even when you use the menu bar in older versions of OmniRemote™.

Should Beam Receive in the Prefs program be on or off?
OmniRemote™ doesn't care whether Beam Receive is turned on or off (with the exception of V1.1, see below). Because leaving Beam Receive on draws more power from your battery (this has nothing to do with OmniRemote™) it's generally a good idea to leave Beam Receive off when you're not using it to "beam" files.

Ironically, because of a bug in OmniRemote™ V1.11, turning beam receive off can actually draw more power. If you have this version, see the question "How do I fix the battery bug in version 1.1?" below.

Can OmniRemote™ drain my batteries?
There is a bug in version 1.1 that can drain batteries, see the question "How do I fix the battery bug in version 1.1?" below.

Other versions of OmniRemote™ do not have this problem. While it is true that the power consumption of the Palm quadruples when it is sending IR, because this happens for only a fraction of a second, no change in battery life will be noticed.

There are two times when OmniRemote™ disables the Palm's internal power switch. This is necessary for technical reasons. It is disabled during training (when the screen says, "Press button on Remote") and auto frequency detection (when the screen says, "Auto Frequency Test"). While the power switch is disabled it is possible to accidentally leave the Palm's power turned on because the normal auto power-off feature cannot operate.

If the auto power-off timer does expire during one of these modes you may notice the power go off unexpectedly when you leave that mode. This is normal behavior and is nothing to worry about.

How do I fix the "battery bug" in version 1.1?
Removing OmniRemote™ will not solve the battery drain problem. Any one of the following procedures will solve the problem.

1. Using the Palm's Prefs program, turn beam receive on (you may turn it back off again if you wish). Install V1.11 (It is not necessary to remove V1.1 before installing V1.11)

or

2. Remove V1.1, then using the Palm's Prefs program, turn beam receive on. (you may turn it back off again if you wish)

or

3. Remove V1.1, then reset the Palm with a paper clip.

Because we are continually writing updates, V1.11 is no longer on the web page, the latest version will work just as well. To download the latest version, click here.

Can I use OmniRemote™ to open my car?
You will probably not have much luck using OmniRemote™ to open your car. Most car keyless entry systems use radio rather than IR. The ones that do use IR use something called "code jumping". This means that every time you open your car the IR code that is used is invalidated and cannot be used again. This means that at most you could use OmniRemote™ to open you car once.

For more info, click here.

Can I use OmniRemote™ for Minidisc titling?
Some people have written programs or macros for Minidisc titling using a Palm, but we are not aware of any programs for sale or download. We're not currently planning on writing a mini-disc titling program. However, the OmniRemote Developers Kit enables you to write PalmOS programs with consumer IR functionality. If you know anyone who knows how to program the Palm, they can write the titling software and link it to OmniRemote™ so that OmniRemote™ can do the actual sending of IR.
